FPC Connector Soldering: Avoid These Common Mistakes for a Perfect Connection

Manual soldering of FPC connectors requires precision to ensure a reliable connection for this critical electronic connector.Below are the key steps for hand soldering an FPC flat cable.

Step 1: FPC Flat Cable Preparation & Fixing

Align the FPC's gold fingers with the PCB's gold-plated pads. The soldering iron temperature must be set as per specification (typically 330±20°C) with a ground resistance ≤5 ohms.

The iron tip must not touch nearby electronic component parts or cause short circuits.

Pre-solder inspection is mandatory before proceeding.

Prepare the moist high-temperature sponge (damp, not dripping) for cleaning the iron tip.

Always clean the tip on the sponge; avoid flicking excess solder.

Step 2: Soldering the FPC Connector

1.Use a flat-head soldering iron tip for the FFC&FPC Connector.

2. Ensure the FPC gold fingers are perfectly aligned and flat on the PCB pads before starting.

3. Apply solder intermittently, carefully controlling the amount.

4. Use a moderate drag soldering technique. The contact time for each gold finger must not exceed 4 seconds.

5. The solder joint height should not exceed 0.4mm.

6. Joints must be smooth, without spikes. The FPC connector must not be lifted, and there should be no cold joints, bridges, or spikes.

7. When removing the iron, ensure no excess solder is transferred to nearby PCB traces or components.
